UAI Analytics Insight

Editor's Note

Good afternoon,

We're changing up some of what we include in these bi-weekly newsletters to make them more informative. The second newsletter of every month will include topics our members have been discussing. February's hot topics include:

  • AMI data retention--Should utilities retain up to 7 years of AMI data?
  • Timescale DB vs Amazon Timestream--Which one is better for handling time series data?
  • Data historian implementation--Should these projects be done internally or with the help of a third party?
  • Smart Speaker Experiences--Are utilities using Alexa, Google Home, etc. as a tool for engaging customers?

Stay warm!

Reimagining Utility Roadmap

The utility industry is challenged now more than ever before by a rapidly changing operating environment that threatens to disrupt the utility business model. To meet this challenge, strategic business goals typically emphasize customer service and engagement, operational excellence, reliability, affordability, safety and clean energy. While limited success may be possible without data and analytics, achieving excellence in these areas demands a data-driven enterprise.

For utilities, asset data can be an invaluable resource that informs about damaged components, aging equipment, and vegetation encroachment, providing an opportunity to mitigate or repair these issues before they turn into big problems. But data sprawl and collecting the wrong data can hinder progress.

If data is a company’s most valuable asset, why can’t we accurately assign a value to it? Most power utilities create more or less the same data types as their peers, but what differentiates them is how some are better at extracting value from their data.
